Making Word Searches for Classrooms and Care Homes

Two audiences with almost opposite vocabularies and nearly identical design constraints. What changes when the puzzle has a job to do.

Most puzzle design advice assumes the solver chose the puzzle. In a classroom or a care setting, they usually did not - somebody handed it to them, and the puzzle has a purpose beyond entertainment: reinforcing a topic, occupying an afternoon, maintaining a habit.

That changes the brief in ways that are worth being explicit about, because the two audiences sit at opposite ends of a life and end up needing almost identical design decisions.

Legibility is the whole game

Before word lists, before themes, before difficulty: the letters have to be readable without effort by someone whose vision is either still developing or no longer what it was.

The working numbers are straightforward. Letter cells of at least 10 millimetres square in print. A sans-serif face at 14 point or larger. Genuine black on genuine white, not grey on cream, and no background texture behind the grid. Generous margins, because the sheet gets held at an angle and rested on a lap.

These constraints cap grid size hard. A page that fits a 20x20 grid at 8 point fits about 12x12 at a legible size, and 12x12 is the honest maximum for both audiences.

A puzzle nobody can read is not an easy puzzle. It is a different puzzle, about eyesight.

Vocabulary from opposite directions

The classroom list is bounded by reading level - short words, common spellings, nothing that needs explaining. That problem is covered in detail in why word searches for kids are harder to make, and the binding constraint is how small the available dictionary is.

The care home list is bounded differently. Vocabulary is not the issue; recall is, and familiarity is the resource. Word lists drawn from a period, a place or a trade - wartime radio programmes, garden flowers, tools, dance halls - do something a generic list cannot, because recognition is doing part of the work that scanning would otherwise have to do alone.

Both cases benefit from filtering a general word source rather than brainstorming. A syllable-filtered index such as this two-syllable list is useful for the classroom end, and a word finder you can query by pattern and length is faster than memory for building themed sets at either end.

Design for completion, not difficulty

In both settings the measure of a good puzzle is the proportion of people who finish it. Not how long it took, not how clever it was.

That inverts most of the standard difficulty advice. Where a magazine grid wants high overlap density and reversed words, these grids want the opposite: words running only left-to-right and top-to-bottom, low overlap, long entries rather than short ones, and a word list printed in the same order the words appear in the grid if the group needs the extra support.

The one difficulty device worth keeping is the hidden message in the leftover letters, because it rewards finishing rather than punishing slowness. It gives the last person to complete the grid the same payoff as the first.

Practical note: print a solution sheet every time, and print it separately. In a group setting somebody will need to check an answer without being handed the whole solution, and a marked-up grid on the back of the puzzle defeats that.

Themes that do a second job

In a classroom, the strongest format is a word list that is also a vocabulary list for the current topic. Twenty words from a unit on the Romans is revision that does not announce itself as revision.

In a care setting, the strongest format is a list that starts a conversation. Twenty seaside town names is a puzzle for ten minutes and a discussion for an hour, and staff running these sessions consistently report that the discussion is the point and the grid is the excuse.

The accessibility checklist

  • One puzzle per sheet. Never a grid and its word list on facing pages.
  • No colour-dependent information. Anything encoded in colour should also be encoded in shape or position.
  • Room to write. Circling a found word needs space around the grid, and shaky hands need more of it.
  • Consistent format across a pack. Same layout every week means the solver spends their attention on the puzzle rather than on the page.

None of this is difficult. It is just a different set of defaults from the ones most puzzle software ships with, and the difference between a grid that gets finished and one that gets put down at word six.
